Sezóna 1978/1979 byla 62. sezonou NHL. Vítězem Stanley Cupu se stal tým Montreal Canadiens. Před sezonou se sloučily týmy Cleveland Barons a Minnesota North Stars a hrály pod názvem posledně jmenovaného týmu. Došlo tak ke snížení počtu účastníků na 17.
